In an age of rushing around, dominated by technology and utilitarianism, taking up paper and pencil (or charcoal, sanguine, chalk...) and starting to draw seems of little purpose. Who has time for such things? Yet the growing interest in learning art techniques makes one think that there is something in the activity that lives on as time progresses and is part and parcel of our very nature. Setting lines down on plane surfaces is an instinctive gesture which hundreds of generations have gone on repeating. It is an action so typical of humankind that, with no pencil at hand, we draw on the sand with a stick. Book jacket.
